ChiArts Visual Arts Audition Prep

The Chicago High School for the Arts is Chicago Public Schools’ flagship arts conservatory — and the visual arts program is one of its most selective tracks. ChiArts uses a conservatory model, which means students aren’t just taking art class alongside traditional academics; they’re in a genuine pre-professional training environment. The audition reflects that. The panel wants to see students who are already engaged in making work, who can draw from observation without flinching, and who come prepared for a serious conversation about their creative practice.

📍 ChiArts is a Chicago Public Schools program. [FLAG: Confirm eligibility requirements — is this limited to CPS/Illinois residents?]

What to Expect at ChiArts Auditions

  • Portfolio of 7–10 original artworks (drawing, painting, mixed media — no digital work unless required)

  • Observational drawing component

  • Timed drawing assignment completed on audition day

  • Student interview with the visual arts faculty

  • Optional sketchbook submission [FLAG: verify whether sketchbook is still listed as optional or has become more formally weighted]

(Always verify requirements directly with the school for the current application year.)

How Et Tú Coaching Prepares Your Student

ChiArts prep emphasizes two things: portfolio breadth and in-person performance. We curate your student’s portfolio to show range without sacrificing a consistent point of view, and we run timed drawing practice sessions so that the on-site assignment is familiar territory by the time audition day arrives. Interview prep is also part of the process.

Et Tú Coaching works remotely, which means no matter where you are in the country, we can build your student’s portfolio, practice timed drawing, and prepare them for every element of the audition. Sessions are flexible, personalized, and scheduled around your family’s calendar.

“Calil assisted my child in preparing for a visual arts program audition. The growth we saw was exponential! From day one they took the time to ensure they understood my child’s strengths, weaknesses, and learning style. They provided individualized feedback and helped them focus their efforts to grow in skill and confidence.” — Janice B., visual arts audition parent
